Starting with the 7000 series from Union Pacific were the dubbed AC6044CW convertibles. At 7500 series was when they were getting true AC6000CW's which didn't last long on the roster. As a matter of fact the 7510,7511,and 7512 were the AC6000CW's that actually were suppose to go to Southern Pacific as 600,601,and 602 but never did because of the merge. The only way to tell the three units apart from the others was the placement of the ditch lights. 7511 in particular was returned by Union Pacific to GE and became GECX 6001 in their lease fleet. The AC6000CW's were problematic and mainteance demanding on turbochargers and crankshafts. Every three months these units needed to be in the shops. Despite the "wheel hop" issues these units when working were absolutely incredible in terms of tractive effort and dynamic braking. Union Pacific rebuilt all of the remainder AC6044CW's into C44ACM's and was doing the same to their AC6000CW's.

@@markjl261 I vividly remember the AC6000CW's in my area many years ago when Union Pacific still had them in high usage. Union Pacific loved using the AC6000CW's for rock and coal trains and thirdly for intermodal traffic if had to be. On top of that I still remember the C40-8's and GP60's within the same time frame on rock trains which made for some odd and in some cases rare lash ups. The SD9043MAC's were another primary choice for coal trains but I hardly remember them as trailing or leading units because they always seemed to be favored as middle and rear DPU's. I didn't know Southern Pacific wanted the AC6000CW's either. Apparently the three units I mentioned were already painted and awaiting at GE but then Union Pacific made them repaint those right then and there. It would've been unique if there was three patched AC6000CW's randomly roaming the system! It's just like the 6 SD80MAC's that CNW really planned on purchasing which would've been in their Operation Lifesaver scheme. Case in point it was the Union Pacific merge that discontinued something that would've happened. As for CSX they sold nearly all of their CW60AC's to PRLX to avoid extra taxes and just because of costs and PSR. Evidently 601 & 602 "Spirit of Waycross" are still on the roster but in storage yet nobody knows what CSX plans to do. CSX unlike Union Pacific didn't rebuild their units but derated them for the most part. The derated units were CW46AH's or CW46AC's and the selected handful of rebuilt units were CW44-6's. Some CW46AC's since then have been sold to shortlines but a certain amount of actual CW60AC's were exported to FMG in Australia for ore train service. Just like the export SD90MAC-H's,the CW60AC's over there were inevitably scrapped. Thank you for sharing your footage! I loved hearing the immense "thump" bounded with rapid chugging of those units. It's similar to the sounds of the U30C's-U33C's or B30/C30's & B36/C36-7's from back in the day and the C44-9W's because of the so called "bathtub" exhaust manifolds including the C41-8's which were somewhat just as loud and echoed!

Outstanding. I lived on the west side of Erie in the late 60s and would take my young son with me when I went train watching at Wallace Junction. At that time there was a Norfolk and Western freight station just west of the grade crossing. I think there was just one run-around siding then. Looks like there is a lot more traffic today. Glad to see it. Thanks for making and posting this video.

Thank you for Watching and Commenting! I appreciate it. I recorded this footage over a course of several years. From a recent visit to Erie and the area along with posts I see on Facebook sadly things have changed at Wallace Junction. The Bessemer on rare occasions goes all the way to the former interchange location with the Norfolk Southern (N&W) at Wallace Junction. Several yard tracks have been removed and this location has been downsized. Norfolk Southern does run mainline trains through the area from Conneaut to Buffalo as before, I'm sure there probably isn't a daily NS local delivering cars to Wallace Junction like in the past. I use to spend a lot of time at this location also years ago, just like with most railroads every thing changes with time. My brother and I had many friends that worked for the N&W and the Bessemer who would let us ride with them in the cabs of the locomotive, things were a lot different 45 years ago compared to now. I have a lot of Great Memories and I am Happy I was able to take photos and videos of how this area and the Erie area use to be! Thanks again for watching and commenting! 👍

This brings back memories when I worked for Penn Central out of my hometown Emporium as a trackman during summers from Penn State. I started in ‘68 not long after the merger with the Pennsy. Our crew worked our way north (opposite of this video) from Emporium, staying in a camp car M-F. The southbound grade from Keating Summit to Emporium is notable for a approx 7-mile 2.6% stretch, the steepest in Pa, and is the subject of a recently published booklet of true stories that I am reading by Paul Haynes, “It Happened On Keating Summit Hill”. The worst incident was a southbound NS derailment at 70mph in 2006 releasing chemicals into the creek killing 30 miles of fish. It was routine to only take half the cars to Emporium on this stretch then return to Port Allegany for the others. As I came back from college each summer, work was progressing north, to Eldred, then into N.Y. to Olean, Franklinville, and Delevan. My last summer started in June ‘70 when Penn Central went bankrupt, and I remember our camp cook having troubles with the local grocery stores taking the company check! Thank you Mark for posting your excellent video.

Thanks for Watching this video and commenting on it! I was actually the engineer on this train and worked on this line for quite a few years, a lot has taken place since this video was recorded and posted. At the time of recording the Blacklands Railroad that I still work for was the designated operator of this former SSW Cotton Belt line that extended from Mount Pleasant, Texas all the way to Fort Worth, Texas. Going on 4 years ago a different operator was appointed to operate the line named the North East Texas Connector Railroad (NETC) by the NETEX Board. I believe they operate to Greenville,Texas 2 or 3 times a week and to Mount Pleasant, Texas 2 times a week. The NETC Railroad does work the line 6 days a week and possibly 7 days a week if needed. Sulphur Springs, Texas is their base of operation and where you will find their two lease locomotives most of the time. At Sulphur Springs is the former Cotton Belt Depot where the main office of the Blacklands Railroad is located, across the street is where the office of the NETC Railroad is located. The Blacklands Railroad still operates the east end of the railroad from Winfield to Mount Pleasant, the NETC Railroad has trackage rights across this portion of the railroad from Winfield to Mount Pleasant. I hope this is helpful and not too confusing. One other note, the train in this video was basically a test train, we were hauling gondola loads of road Asphalt at the time from Mount Pleasant to Greenville. I believe we moved a total of 12 trains in all before the project ended.

A number of cars were put in temporary storage during the pandemic due to insufficient demand to keep the network running with it’s entire fleet as well as furloughing a number of mechanics which limits the ability to perform overhauls on the railcars. For nearly two years, Amtrak has been working to refill those positions because their workforce was insufficient to maintain the fleet at historic levels. It is expected that sometime later this fiscal year that they will finally be able to speed up overhaul work on the cars that are sitting at the Beech Grove shops out of service with most of them expected to be restored to service sometime next fiscal year. We could see a handful of cars restored to service this summer.
